Welcome
East Coast 50 is an informal partnership between The Woolverstone Project and East Anglian Sailing Trust.
It was formed in 2010 as a joint initiative, to raise awareness of disabled sailing through the promotion of sailing-based events, as well as to raise funds to enable its continuance. We hope these events will encourage interested people to volunteer to help the disabled get afloat, and raise public awareness of the opportunities for disabled sailing, primarily in the East of England.
In our first season, over £4,000 was raised for the two charities, through a number of unusual events, and great fun was had by all. With your help, we hope to exceed this figure in 2011.
Review of 2010
On 5th June, we held a Cruiser Challenge and Barbecue at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, to coincide with the long-established Haven Series of races, whose participants joined us for the barbecue, and collected donations from each boat. The format of the Cruiser Challenge consisted of a “treasure hunt” on the water, with each boat collecting evidence of visiting a number of navigation marks. This proved very popular with entrants, although the turnout was rather disappointing. The total raised was over £1,400 for the weekend, and so, by popular demand, the event is being repeated on 11 June 2011.
Two weeks later, the Deben Event was run by Deben Yacht Club and Waldringfield Sailing Club, and this coincided with the official opening of DYC’s new veranda and pontoon. The weather was disappointing, and stopped the intended joint racing, but both Clubs got on the water to raise money on our behalf. WSC charged each participating boat a financial penalty at the start of each race, which they had to reduce by choosing their course to round as many marks as possible within a given time. In spite of the horrible weather, over £1,100 was raised, mainly from the catering at DYC.
On 25th July, two events were held on the Alde, organised by the combined resources of Aldeburgh YC, Slaughden SC and Orford SC. The events were a race round Havergate Island and a treasure hunt/ barbecue at Little Japan. These were followed by a hog roast at AYC, with the auction of a donated painting. Over £1,900 was raised for East Coast 50.
Events were also held at Wrabness on the Stour, at Alton Water, and Stone Point, Walton.
Events 2011
We hope you will join us in many good days sailing this year, with the benefit of raising some sponsorship money in tribute to sailing colleagues who, because of some form of disability, need help to get themselves on the water.
